Technology Fights Hospital Infections

Hey! Wouldnt it be sad if your grandmother is in the hospital and suddenley gets a Hospital Infection, that the doctors cant cure and she might die! Well you should britten up your mood because i have something that can cure your granny, it was made a cuple of thousand years ago, its called technology. But its actually HINS light (wich is Technology). In this Report I will explore the ways that this type of technology can cure patients.

The technology decontaminates the air and exposed surfaces by bathing them into visible-light, known as HINS-light. The clinic at Glasgow Royal Infirmary has proven that Environmental Decontamination System provides significantly greater reductions of bacterial pathogens in the hospital environment than can be achieved by cleaning and disinfection alone, providing a huge step forward in hospitals' ability to prevent the spread of infection. Technology was discovered and developed by a multidisciplinary team of experts, Professor Scott Macgregor (Electrical Engineer), Professor John Anderson and Dr Michelle Maclean (Microbiologists) and Professor Gerry Woolsey (Optical Physicist.) Professor Anderson stated: “The technology kills pathogens but is harmless to patients and staff, which means for the first time; hospitals can continuously disinfect wards and isolation rooms.” This means that it can help the human kind with no problems.

In conclusion I believe that this is something that can really help us because there are no Cons to this “invention” there are only Pros which will really help humans but mostly patients, and even staff (staff of the hospital.)

This Video that we watched in class was called "Human Footprints" it was Posted by National Geographic.

The video spoke a lot about sustainability. What is sustainability?

Sustainability is the property of being sustainable so it basically means how it is possibly to stand against to sustain in varuis situations.
What is a human footprint?
A human footprint is what the humans leave behind not the foots print, but what type of message we send across, how we act will stay there like a footprint.
Ecological Footprint
An ecological footprint is something that is left behind that is seeable toward our Ecosystem.
What does Earth have to do with our footprint?
Again it means what we leave behind and what it is like.

In Conclusion
In conclusion the video mostly spoke about what we do to our environment weather it is bad or good, it also spoke about how to stop these ecological problems.

Have you ever though oh it would be sooo...... cool if a Nanogenerator would be able to power electrical devices so it would develop our environment” of course you have! And I am going to make your dreams come true, because they are true, I will explain to you why they are true.

The laboratory of Zhong Lin Wang at Georgia Tech, discovered that the blinking number on a small LCD signals the success of a five-year effort to power conventional electronic devices with nanoscale generators that harvest mechanical energy from the environment using an array of tiny nanowires. The mechanical energy is able to fit in between your finger (it is very small). These sources of energy could be used to power nanoscale and microscale devices and even to recharge pacemakers or iPods. "By simplifying our design, making it more robust and integrating the contributions from many more nanowires, we have successfully boosted the output of our nanogenerator enough to drive devices such as commercial liquid-crystal displays, light-emitting diodes and laser diodes," stated Wang. Recent improvements in the nanogenerators, including a simpler fabrication technique, were reported online last week in the journal Nano Letters.

Conclusion

In conclusion I believe that this could really improve our environment because of all the energy. This device can power every day materials without hurting the Economy which in my opinion is very helpful, this product would also be cheap (affordable) which is great again for the Economy.

Have you ever thought about how much CO2 you are breathing wild eating in a year? Of course you have not that why I’m bringing it up, over 2 tons of Carbon Dioxide is being inhaled!

A group of Spanish Scientists have discovered that human excrements play in the life cycle of food. It is the first time that a scientific study of this type incorporates the role played by human excrements.Food in Spain produces emissions of around two tons of carbon dioxide per person and per year (more than 20% of the total emission per person and per year) and consumes 20 gigajoules of primary energy," states Iván Muñoz, the main author of the study and researcher at the UAL. According to the study, producing food from animals, such as meat and dairy products, causes the greatest impact. Human excretion contributes dramatically to water polluting through providing organic matter and nutrients, such as nitrogen and phosphorus, which fosters the growth of algae, a decrease in the level of oxygen dissolved in the water, bad smells and other problems associated to eutrophication.

In conclusion I believe that this Event is not needed because there is no way to stop humans from excreting waste, and even if there was it would be extremely unhealthy. So I believe that this event should not be valid.

The Power of Thoughts

How cool would it be to be able to control indavidual braincells with only your thoughts? I will tell you it would be really cool, and possible today.

Five years ago, neuroscientist Christ of Koch of the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) discovered that a single neuron in the human brain can function much like a sophisticated computer and recognize people, landmarks, and objects, suggesting, sometimes even memories.

In the October a statement was made by Koch (the Lois and Victor Troendle Professor of Cognitive and Behavioral Biology and professor of computation and neural) individuals can rapidly, consciously, and voluntarily control neurons deep inside their head,.” This was also proven in the UCLA.

The study was conducted on 12 patients at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, where Fried directed the Epilepsy Surgery Program. All of the patients suffered from seizures that could not be controlled by medication. To help localize where their seizures were originating in preparation for possible later surgery, the patients were surgically implanted with electrodes deep within the centers of their brains Cerf used these electrodes to record the activity, as indicated by spikes on a computer screen, of individual neurons in parts of the medial temporal. Prior to recording the activity of the neurons, Cerf interviewed each of the patients to learn about their interests. "I wanted to see what they like -- say, the band Guns N' Roses, the TV show House, and the Red Sox," he says. Using that information, he created for each patient a data set of around 100 images reflecting the things he or she cares about.

In conclusion I believe that I have stated enough facts to prove that it can help people with diseases and change the future.

Current Events 3 (Rare Japanese Plant Has Largest Genome Known to Science)




Scientists at Kew's Jodrell Laboratory have discovered that Paris Japonica, a striking rare native of Japan(1), has the largest genome(2) of them all -- bigger than the human genome and even larger than the previous record holder -- the marbled lungfish.

The diversity of genome sizes (the amount of DNA) in plants and animals has fascinated but at the same time puzzled scientists since this variation was first detected in the early 20th century. How and why such diversity evolved are important unanswered questions because we know that it has biological and ecological consequences that affect the distribution and persistence of biodiversity.

There is a staggering diversity of genome sizes. The smallest genome (3) so far reported (0.0023 pg of DNA) is found in a parasite of humans and other mammals. The human genome, at 3.0 pg, is 1300 times larger than this, but this pales into insignificance compared to those found in some animals and plants.

Among animals, some amphibians have enormous genomes, but the largest recorded so far is that of the marbled lung fish with 132.83 pg(3) . Among plants, the record holder for 34 years was a species of fritillary until earlier this year when a Dutch group knocked the fritillary off the top spot when they found that a natural hybrid of trillium , related to herb paris had a genome just 4% larger than the fritillary (132.50 pg).

This was widely thought to be approaching the maximum size that a genome could reach, until this summer when a team of Kew scientists discovered that the genome of another close relative of herb paris, Paris japonica from Japan, is a staggering 15% bigger than the genome of either the trillium or the fish at a whopping 152.23 pg
